What Is A Habanero Pepper?

A habanero is a type of chili pepper, specifically one of the hottest varieties commonly available. It belongs to the species Capsicum chinense, which also includes other hot peppers like Scotch bonnets. Habaneros are small, lantern-shaped peppers that typically measure between 1 and 2 inches in length. They range in color from green to orange when ripe and are known for their intense heat, which can vary but generally ranges between 100,000 to 350,000 on the Scoville scale (SHU), making them among the hottest peppers in the world. Despite their heat, habaneros also possess a fruity and slightly sweet flavor, which adds complexity to dishes when used sparingly. They are commonly used in salsas, hot sauces, marinades, and other spicy dishes.

What Is Salsa?

Salsa is a versatile sauce or condiment that originated in Latin American cuisine, particularly in Mexico. It typically consists of chopped tomatoes, onions, chili peppers, cilantro, and various seasonings such as salt, lime juice, and sometimes garlic. Salsas can vary widely in texture and flavor depending on the ingredients used and how they are prepared.

There are many different types of salsa, ranging from mild to extremely spicy and from chunky to smooth. Some popular variations include:

  • Pico de Gallo: Also known as salsa fresca, pico de gallo is a chunky salsa made from diced tomatoes, onions, cilantro, chili peppers, and lime juice. It’s typically served as a topping for tacos, nachos, or grilled meats.
  • Salsa verde: This “green salsa” is made from tomatillos (green tomatoes), chili peppers, onions, cilantro, and lime juice. It has a tangy, slightly tart flavor and is often used as a condiment for enchiladas, tacos, and grilled meats.
  • Chipotle Salsa: Chipotle salsa is made from chipotle peppers (smoked jalapeños), tomatoes, onions, garlic, and various spices. It has a smoky, spicy flavor and is commonly used in Mexican and Tex-Mex cuisine.
  • Mango Salsa: Mango salsa combines diced mangoes with onions, chili peppers, cilantro, lime juice, and sometimes other fruits like pineapple or papaya. It has a sweet, spicy flavor and pairs well with grilled fish or chicken.

What You Need To Make Easy Mango Habanero Salsa

  • Ripe Mangoes — The key ingredient for this salsa is a ripe fresh mango. Gently squeeze your mango to see if it is soft. If there is no give, it’s not ready to eat yet.
  • Ripe Roma Tomatoes — Roma is a good choice since it is a meatier tomato and holds up well to dicing.
  • Red Onion
  • Habanero Pepper or similar hot pepper — Remove the seeds from the pepper before dicing. If you want to go a little less spicy, you can look for a milder pepper, such as jalapeno peppers. The recipe calls for 2 peppers, but if you want a milder salsa, you can use just 1 pepper.
  • Lime — Fresh lime juice adds an acidic balance to the salsa.
  • Salt & Black Pepper
  • A little cilantro and freshly grated ginger are optional

Step-By-Step How To Guide

  • Step 1 — Peel and small dice the ripe mango and red onion. Small dice the tomatoes. Remove the seeds from the peppers and dice (be sure to thoroughly wash your hands when you finish and avoid contact with your eyes).
  • Step 2—In a small bowl, combine the ingredients, sprinkle with salt and black pepper, squeeze the juice of one lime over the mixture, and stir to combine.
  • Step 3—Garnish with fresh cilantro if you like (I skip this part because some people don’t like cilantro, including me).

Tip For Success

  • If you plan on storing it in the refrigerator, store it in an airtight container. Leftover salsa can be stored for 2-3 days.
  • You can easily adapt this Mango Habanero Salsa Recipe to other tropical fruits, such as papaya or pineapple, making a wide variety of fruit salsa.
  • Be careful when handling hot peppers. If you can, wear gloves when de-seeding and chopping. And be sure to thoroughly wash your hands when you finish.
  • Peeling and dicing a mango is tricky. I find that cutting the flesh from the large pit first and then peeling is easiest. Fresh mangoes have a long flat pit, and the trick is cutting the flesh away along the long flat side of the pit. But don’t worry—your chopping of a mango will be messy. It’s not an easy job.
